Allen Doss, 61, a lifelong resident Damascus, Va., passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019, after a lengthy illness.

He was the only child of the late Roy and Jean Doss of Damascus, Va.  He is also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Billie Fleenor of Benhams, Va.; brother-in-law, Andy Fleenor; and nephew, Drew Fleenor.

He was of the Methodist faith and a prior member of Damascus United Methodist Church.

He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as Maintenance Superintendent of the North Bristol Area Headquarters.  He also worked part time as a fire warden and a tractor plow operator for Virginia Department of Forestry.

Allen served his community as a member of the Washington County Lifesaving Crew and was an EMT in both the Abingdon and Damascus area for several years.  In 1974, he became a Jr. Firefighter in the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department, moving up to the senior department in 1976, serving many years as Chief Engineer and as junior department advisor, taking his life membership only when his health forced him to.  He was a past president and secretary of the Washington County Firefighters Association.  He was also District 6 Executive Committee member of the Virginia State Firefighters Association, representing the firefighters of the western region of the state.

Allen Doss was the happiest when plowing snow or fighting fire until his grandchildren came along and they quickly took over top billing in his life.  The last few years he also enjoyed watching Ernie pull at antique tractor pulls.

Survivors include his wife, Mona; son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Anita Doss of Shady Valley, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Khala and Jason Campbell of Meadowview, Va.; grandchildren, Ryan Campbell, Ryleigh Campbell, Brandon Doss, Allen Walker Doss, Julieanne Rymer and husband, Brandon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Terri Fleenor and brother-in-law, Joe Fleenor; nieces and nephews, Tessa Fogleman, Beth Fleenor, Kenneth Fleenor III and Krystal Whitlach.  Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Honorary pallbearers will be past and present employees of the Lebanon Residency of VDOT, past and present members of the Western Region of VDOF, past and present members of the Washington County Firefighters Association and the Washington County Lifesaving Crew.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6:45 p.m., on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Frost Funeral Home.  A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m., with Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating and eulogy by Mike Stevens.  The committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, Va.
