Barbara Cowdery Harris, 95, passed away peacefully at her home on October 17, 2024. Barbara was born on March 22, 1929, in Miami, Florida to the late Erwin and Eugenia Cowdery. She spent her childhood in Florida, and later graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Education.
She taught P.E. and met her husband, Charles A. Harris, at Coral Gables High School. They married in 1951 and had two daughters together: Cathy Ann, and Nancy Jane.
Barbara dedicated her life to teaching and impacting the lives of many students through her career. She taught Junior High school math and was also a citywide Bible teacher.
In 1994 Barbara moved to Abingdon, Virginia and remained in her home until she passed. She is proceeded in death by her loving husband, Charles, who passed away in 2000. She is survived by William and Mary Stuart; her two daughters Cathy Harris Fugate (Zeke), and Nancy Harris Youmans (Bill); two grandsons Charles William Youmans (Megan), and Joseph Edward Youmans (Valeria); and two great-granddaughters Melanie Jane Youmans, and Alice Josephine Youmans.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in her honor to her church, Green Spring Presbyterian in Abingdon, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Reverend Deidra Crosby and Reverend William Youmans.
