Chessie Elliott Cornett, 95, of Abingdon, Virginia departed this life on March 12, 2025, after a battle with bladder cancer and dementia.
She was born on February 15, 1930, in West Virginia to her parents, William P. and Molly
Magnolia “Maggie” Farmer Elliott.
She met the love of her life, Tom Cornett, of Mountain City, TN, and they were married July 6, 1948. Their first home was on Ackerson Creek in Laurel Bloomery, TN on Tom’s home place.
In 1954, they purchased a three-story building in Abingdon, VA and opened a used furniture and antique store, making their home in an apartment on the second floor.
In 1964 that building was sold to the Methodist Church and torn down for parking; thus, building a new store on West Main Street and residing in the country. Both ran their furniture business until Tom’s death in 1978.
She loved to sew, quilt, and do embroidery, giving many items to the special people in her life, as well as growing plants and flowers, having a “green thumb”.
She and her husband Tom, were very active members of the Southwest Virginia Model-A Restorer’s Club, enjoying drives, and the annual car shows. She was a former member of Bethel Presbyterian Church; however, the past few years she and her daughter regularly
attended Zion Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William P. Elliott and Maggie Farmer Elliott, her husband, Tom Cornett, brothers James Eliott, Ray Eliott, Junior Glen Elliott, Robert Elliott, and Howard Elliott, sisters Hester Elliott Farmer, Bonnie Elliott Willen, and Carrie McCurry.
Survivors are one daughter Carolynn Joy Cornett; one son Alan Thomas Cornett and wife Pam; three grandchildren Kristen Cornett, Taylor Cornett, and Zac Cornett; her sister-in-law Barbara Cornett Wilson; her brother-in-law Junior Cornett; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wiliam Mark Handy for his care and support, along with special friends: Barbara Singleton, Sara Johnson Harless, David and Reatha Cole, Beverly Helton, Thelma Jean Salyer, Ralph and Madeline Adams, and two special nieces Wanda McCurry Felts and Joyce Cornett Matheson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 1:00 P.M. at Frost Funeral Home in Abingdon, Virginia with Deacon Tom Elliott and Deacon Steve Helton. Procession will follow to Sunset Memorial Park in Mountain City, Tennessee.
Pallbearers will include David Cole, Terry Weatherly, Myrl Dunham, Harold Wright, Buddy Honaker, and Darrell Holmen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Zion Methodist Church C/O Mary Eleanor Widener, 31331 Wright Road, Damascus, Virginia 24361 or to the American Cancer Society.
