Dennis Lee Godfrey

Dennis Lee Godfrey of Abingdon, VA, passed away on April 1, 2025, due to complications from a fall at the age of 78. Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan (Fischer) Godfrey.

Dennis was born on February 3, 1947, in Louisville, KY to Robert Reed Godfrey and Rose Jean Heins. He is survived by his brother Wayne (Janet) Godfrey of Louisville, KY and sister Rose (Richard) Elliott of Albuquerque, NM. Dennis’ children are Erin (Lori) Godfrey of Kennesaw, GA; Patrick (Karla) Godfrey of Wingate, NC; and Robert Godfrey and Peter (Amanda) Godfrey of Abingdon, VA. Grandchildren are Madison, Owen, Lila and John Godfrey; Katilyn (Ryan) Hughart; and Alanna (fiancée Matt Ghant) Godfrey. Great-grandchildren are Ethan and Callen Hughart.

Dennis graduated from Western High School of Louisville, KY in 1965. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1971. Dennis received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

Dennis served as the Commonwealth Attorney for Washington County, VA from 1984-1999 and then again from 2004-2011. He was the only Commonwealth Attorney for Washington County to be elected for four consecutive terms. Dennis served as a Special Magistrate for the period of 2013-2019.

Dennis spent many years working with youth athletics especially enjoying his time as a Little League umpire. One of his proudest moments was when he was selected as an umpire at a Virginia State Little League Tournament.

A funeral Mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, Abingdon, VA, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. A celebration of life party will be held at a future date.
