Donald "Don" Ray Atwell

May 18, 1945 – November 27, 2024

Donald "Don" Ray Atwell, age 79, of Bristol, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024, in Melbourne, Florida.

From humble beginnings, he was born in the Brumley Gap “Poor Valley” community of Virginia on May 18, 1945, to the late Delmar Edward Atwell and Retha Irene Patrick Atwell and was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA.

Don dedicated much of his life to the car industry, a field he began working in as a teenager and continued until his retirement.  He owned/operated Car City, Inc in Abingdon, VA for over 30 years and even in his “retirement,” continued to buy and sell automobiles. His passion for cars and the automotive world was unwavering, and he was well-known in the community for his knowledge and expertise. 

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy and Bill Atwell.

Don is survived by his son, Donald Atwell (Caprice) of Indialantic, FL; daughter, Christa Atwell of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Abram Morton and Georgia Morton of Kingsport, TN; mother of his children, Pamela Atwell of Glade Spring, VA; aunt, Peggy Jane Garrett of Abingdon, VA; nieces, Vicky Musick (Jeff) and Pam Atwell of Abingdon, VA; nephew, Geoff Atwell (Lisa) of Bokeelia, FL; and many cousins and friends.

A graveside service will be held in the mausoleum building at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, VA, on Friday, December 6, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will take place at Dealers Auto Auction of East TN in Johnson City, TN, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Don's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
