Hobert Carrier "Hob" Flanagan

Hobert Carrier (Hob) Flanagan, 83, of Abingdon, Virginia went to his Heavenly home on October 16, 2024. He entered this world on June 25, 1941, to his parents Ellis Y. Flanagan Sr and Jean Johnson Flanagan. He was the second of four children and was raised on the family farm on Walden Road in Abingdon. He stayed in Abingdon all his life and loved to set and talk about the history of the town and surrounding areas. He attended William King High School where he played football for the “William King Mighty Midgets”. After high school he started work in the automotive industry and continued that path for the majority of his life. He met his wife of 61 years at Pop Ferguson’s skating rink on the west end of Abingdon. He swept Sue Burke off her feet in 1960, and they married on February 2, 1963.

Hob loved vintage cars and motorcycles, and judged many car shows in his life. He passed on his love for motorcycles to his daughter as well. He was also a die-hard Virginia Tech fan and loved to debate the good and bad points of ACC versus SEC conferences. He was a member of the Washington County Virginia Moose Lodge 1966 from almost the beginning. He was also an amazing cook and loved to put anything on a smoker. He was well known for barbecued bologna that he smoked for hours and basted it with his own sauce.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Ellis and Jean Flanagan, as well as his brother Ellis “EY” Flanagan Jr.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Sue B Flanagan; one daughter, Missie Flanagan Cullop (husband Michael); two sisters Linda L. Flanagan and Betty F. Webb (husband Ronnie); sister-in-law Ann B Williamson (husband Skeeter Gardner); one grandson Chase Cullop (wife Lorna); one great-daughter Caroline Cullop (who he called “Martha”). He was also survived by several cousins and too many friends to count.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Jonkers and her nurse Kristy for all their love, care, and concern during these past months, as well as Dwana Doane and Sara Farmer for their compassion toward the end.

The family will receive friends at Frost Funeral Home on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. A service will be held Friday, October 18, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Frost Funeral Home with speaker Missie Cullop and Jermey Monk officiating. A committal service will follow at KnollKerg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Chase Cullop, Michael Cullop, Junior Taylor, Stacy Taylor, Aaron Anderson, and Camille Finney.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Freddie Sutherland, Joe Sutherland, Jan Hortenstein, Tim Fields, and all the members of the Virginia Highlands Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and Washington Co Moose Lodge.

In lieu of flowers he asked that donations be made to Duck Unlimited in his memory.
