Jone Morrow Sutherland

Glade Spring, VA

Jone Morrow Sutherland went to be with the Lord on the morning of Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at home with family by his side. He was 90 years old.

Jone was born in Dante, Virginia on December 18, 1933. He was the son of Miles Nelson Sutherland, a coal miner, and Nannie Gray (Rasnick) Sutherland.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joan Dye Sutherland, his sister Mary Nell Grizzle of Kingsport, TN, and his brother, Charles Sutherland.

Jone is survived in death by his daughter, Suzette Hope Sutherland of Glade Spring, VA; his daughter Jonna Faith Gregory and son-in-law Charles Allen Gregory of Glade Spring, VA; brother-in-law, Lowell Grizzle (Peggy), of Kingsport, TN and his children Angela Grizzle of Johnson City, TN, Keith Grizzle (Veronica) of Kingsport, TN, and Steve Grizzle of Johnson City, TN; sister-in-law, Debbie Sutherland (the late Charles Sutherland) of Glade Spring, VA and their children Lindy Smith (Eric) of Bristol, TN, Wynn Sutherland of Glade Spring, VA, Shea Sutherland of Glade Spring, VA; and cousins Ruby Long, Gala Rose, and Vivian Rasnick (Dennis) of Dante, VA.

In addition, Jone is survived by several close neighbors including the family of Patsy Wallace (the late Ted Wallace) of Glade Spring, VA and their children Andy Wallace and his wife Kim of Chilhowie, VA, Pastor Jeff Wallace of Glade Spring, VA, Ginger Wallace Clark of Concord, NC, and Pamela Wallace Greene of Morristown, TN.

Jone graduated from Emory and Henry College and received a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia. He served two years in the Army before beginning his career in the field of education. Jone accepted a principalship at Liberty Hall and later Damascus Elementary School, followed by a principalship of over 20 years at Abingdon Elementary School before retiring. Jone also enjoyed raising cattle and working on the farm.
