Katie Moore Thomas

Abingdon, Virginia

Katie Moore Thomas of Abingdon Virginia passed away Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Katie had a passion for gardening, canning, cooking and collecting an unbelievable amount of holiday decorations that still occupy the attic. And who can forget the plethora of brightly colored costume jewelry (both free to good home). Katie was an incredible cook and ensured that everyone around her was always well fed. She had a genuine interest in all things history, especially the Civil War. However, nothing or no one piqued her interest quite like Elvis Presley and Conway Twitty. We are certain she was greeted into the gates of heaven with a special “Hello Darlin.”

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray Moore, Voy Mae Babetski and brother Jerry Moore.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years Glenn “Ottie” Thomas.

Left to cherish her memory and to fight over her recipes are son David (Phyllis) Thomas of Abingdon, Donna (Rick) Nunley of Abingdon. Grandchildren Ashley Pope, Jess (Blake) Putnam, Blake Mellinger (Amy), Brittany (Justin) Harris. Great-Grandchildren Kylie, Wiley, Lilah, Nora, Charlie-Kate, Mason, McKenna, and Elijah. Brothers Bob (Jan) Moore, Nick Babetski, Gene Babetski, Frank Babetski and sister Janie Maxwell. Katie is also survived by her niece Sharon Blevins who helped care for her these last 7 years.

The family wants to extend a special thank you to her special friend and caregiver Stacy Perkins for taking the most excellent care of “Margaret” the past several years.

Thank you to the staff of Mountain View Retirement Home for the care given to Katie in her last months of life. As well as Megan Lester RN and Steve Fletcher RN.

The family will receive friends Sunday, September 15, 2024, from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at Washington Chapel United Methodist Church, 25221 Walden Road, Abingdon, Virginia, 24210.   A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. at the church with Pastor Larry Lusk and Pastor Junior Gobble officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers are Blake Putnam, Billy Ford, David Lloyd, Otis Arnold, Mark Barrett, Stacy Perkins, Roger White and Ben Able. Honorary Pallbearers include Milton Maiden, Danny Ryan, Jerry Taylor, Phil Rasnick, Mike Hoback and Joe Andis.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be sent to Washington Chapel United Methodist Church in Abingdon or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Frost Funeral Home and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Katie Thomas.
