November 8, 1948 – April 7, 2025
Roy Shortt, lovingly known as Jack, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, at his daughter’s home in Carter County, Tennessee, at the age of 76.
Born on November 8, 1948, to Garland and Emma Shortt, Jack was one of five siblings and spent his entire life in the river hills of Abingdon, Virginia, on the family farm he cherished. A devoted farmer and talented handyman, Jack was a man of the land—he loved planting things and watching them grow, a quiet joy that mirrored the way he nurtured those around him.
Jack was known for his kindness, his strength, and his unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand. He had a deep love for nature, especially the springtime when everything was in bloom, and found peace in the world around him. He loved his dogs like family, and his greatest pride was always his own—his children and grandchildren.
Jack never lost his childlike wonder of the world. He truly loved being alive and embraced every moment with the curiosity and joy of a young spirit. He often said he wished he could be 16 forever so that he could play, explore, and be free, just like he did as a child. That sense of wonder and love for life was infectious, and it touched everyone who knew him.
Jack had the best laugh—a sound that could brighten any room and bring smiles to those around him. His laughter was one of his most endearing qualities, and it will be missed every single day.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Shortt, and his sisters Francis, Maxine, and Christine. He is survived by his son, Christopher Shortt; daughter, Patricia Reichenbach; grandchildren Zackary, Nathan, Christian, Alaina, and Mya; and great-granddaughter Oakley Jax, who was lovingly named after him. He also leaves behind his older brother, Henry Shortt, and several nieces and nephews.
Jack had a rare gift for working with his hands—he could fix just about anything—and he carried that same care and strength into the way he loved his family. He taught those around him to live life a little slower, to look around and notice the beauty most people rush past. His presence made the world brighter, and his loss leaves it a little dimmer.
He was an amazing dad, a beloved brother and uncle, a cherished pawpaw, and a loyal friend to so many throughout his life. His love and wisdom will continue to inspire all who knew him. Jack was a steady soul, a quiet light in the lives of all who knew him. He will be so deeply missed.
